More than a year ago I wrote a post about the weight of unnecessary. Since that time it’s become more and more clear to me that we are all burdened by doing things we don’t have to do and thinking things we don’t have to think.
Why this is so is a very complicated, personal thing, but I think for most of us the unnecessary begins its life as expectation and grows into avid conscientiousness. We just want to do everything we do as well as we possibly can, even if it’s a relatively trivial and unimportant matter.
Your unnecessary will be different to mine, of course, and mine different to everyone else’s. The silly things we do define us in many ways. We tie ourselves up trying to do everything perfectly and worrying what others will think but if we’re ever going to spring through life, it’s time to unravel a few of those knots.
Today’s task is therefore a simple one. I want us to identify 3 things we do or think that are getting in our way of achieving something or being the somebody we want to be. Whether that’s a big something, or a little something is entirely up to you. But I reckon finding three unnecessary things in our lives will be rather easy to do.
To spark your thinking, here are some life-wasting things that people do:
- Making promises to ourselves that we never, ever keep
- Over-cleaning our homes
- Comparing ourselves to others
- Worrying what people think of us all the time
- Buying things we don’t need
- Judging others instead of ourselves
- Worrying about things we can’t control
- Not worrying enough about the things we can control
- Spending money we just don’t have
- Watching too much television
- Ironing
And here are a few useless thoughts that people insist on having:
- I’m not good enough
- I could never do that
- I’m useless
- I want, I want, I want
- I’m not a good mother
- I can’t [fill in the blank]
