Last Friday seems like a very long time ago… I can’t remember a time when the weeks didn’t fly by leaving me far below making SOS signals in the sand with coconuts. See, I’ve still got islands on the brain, but it really does seem like ages ago that I was beavering away into the night to produce Capper’s island party. But beaver I did and it went off without a hitch.
It will come as no surprise to you all that I just really, really wanted a quiet week, but alas, I was not given one. I’ve been reluctantly fashioning up three passable Halloween costumes after I foolishly gave into my three-year-long ‘no’ to Halloween and agreed the kids could join their mates and do the junky T&T stranger accosting tonight. So that’s where I am as this post goes live – dragging my sorry ass around the backstreets bothering the neighbours. My life is scary enough without the faux spiders.
I also angsted most of the week about having to go on Twitter for the #voicesof2014 masterclass question corner on Wednesday night. It was just as busy and daunting as I remember it and if you asked me a question and received crickets, just know that this cricket had 389 notifications pop up in just one hour. I am used to about 1 a month.
To add to the angst, our Max is ‘playing up’ and those that know my son well will know how generous I am being with my euphemism. He can make life very tough, my boy, which is one of the reasons I wrote this post about loving the children we have, not the children we think we have…
I found this quote when I was gathering my thoughts and it resonated with me a great deal. Kurt Cobain, eh? I think of Kurt Cobain and I remember that I was sitting on the verandah at Manning Bar when the news broke that he was dead. Do you remember where you were?
Love you little Cappers.
Other things that had me this week:
Reading – this awesome article about the worst blogging advice experts have ever received. Gems include ‘content is king’ and ‘publish regularly’… I found the advice surprisingly relaxing.
Writing – my next newsletter! You can sign up right here!
Making – a picnic play mat. It’s the cutest thing. Bring back Squares!
Wishing – I was better at saying no.
Loving – seeing my siblings. I come from good people.
Wondering – how to see what’s really in front of me.
Happy reading.

Jodi Gibson (JF Gibson Writer) says
I remember seeing it on the nightly news when I got home from work. Such a loss, but sometimes people are put on this world to change it and then taken too soon. He did that.
Maxabella says
In a weird way, he did. He had a way bigger impact than I think he knew. x
Jo @Countrylifeexperiment says
I’m still in the No Halloween mode. Fortunately there is only 2 houses within a 1km radius, so it’s not a big deal around here! Thanks for hosting again Bron!
Maxabella says
🙂 That made me smile, Jo. Yet another advantage to living in the country! x
Emily says
We just trick-or-treated for the first time. Two out of thirty houses in our street were doing it – more than I thought, actually, and enough to keep 4yo excited about her ‘stash’ of chocolate (four mini Mars bars and two lollipops).
I was at school when I heard about Kurt Cobain. I think it was the day after – remember how we didn’t have internet back then? No texts. My friend wrote me a tear-stained letter about how her life would never be the same without new songs from Nirvana.
Maxabella says
Oh that’s a classic – I hope you kept the letter.
On our run around my friend’s neighbourhood (just up from ours’) there were lots of houses ready with chocolates, but we didn’t see a single other trick or treater… x
Zanni Louise says
No idea…I am definitely a Gen Y-er 🙂 My husband will be able to tell you. Hope you get a cruisy week next week? x
Maxabella says
I’m definitely showing my age, Zanni. I should have said I was in my Year 3 reading groups when I heard the news, instead of drinking… x
Mother Down Under says
We got some trick or treaters who asked for some non perishable food to donate to a local shelter…I thought that was a nice idea…maybe makes it a bit less “hollow”
In any case, I hope next week is a more relaxing one for you!
Maxabella says
When we came back from trick or treating I felt so dirty and I said to Bart, “next year I think we might ask for a gold coin to donate to charity in lieu of lollies” and he looked at me in amusement and said, “Yep, there’s always one.” x
Trudie @ My Vintage Childhood says
Oh lovely what a week. I’m feeling like I want some long lash weekends, actually make it weeks before the silly season is upon us. I hope the week ahead presents him with some spaces to breath and collect yourself. You’re a rockstar and do an amazing job with all the hats you wear I popped over to your parent post and left a comment, I so get what you’re saying. Anyways I’m leaving big huge hugs of love, here’s to a calm peaceful week.
Maxabella says
We could definitely do with a spoonful of calm around here (or a spoonful of something stronger!). Thanks do much for your support, Trudie, it means such a lot and I know you get it. x
Sandra Kelly says
I’m in love with that Kurt Cobain quote… quite powerful for me at the moment. Thank you for sharing x
Maxabella says
Nails it, doesn’t he? x
Sarah@tomfo says
Oh sounds like a busy week. I had one of those too and it’s still going, it’s all been fun stuff though. We did the trick or treat last night too and it was bigger than last year here.
Hope next week has some chillax time for you and me x
Maxabella says
Chillax is my middle name this weekend. x
Lisa@RandomActsOfZen says
No trick or treating here last night, our school had a compulsory graduation event. Must admit, I was a little bit grateful of that clashing timetable, as I think many of the parents secretly were. We have been out on Halloween, and it was great fun, but I don’t mind missing all that extra sugar.
You’ve had a huge week Bron, I hope this weekend is seeing you relax a bit. Sounds like your mothering nerve is being tested a little, lean on your network, hun.
I remember hearing about KC, feels like a hundred years ago and five minutes ago, at the same time (think it’s time I had another coffee haha)
Hugs to you xx
Raychael aka Mystery Case says
Must be something in the air, I’ve had one of those weeks too. 9 events, a hubby at sea with no contact for up to a month, a trip to ER with my youngest and doing double time (with little to no sleep) to keep up. I’m ready for long service leave the minute hubby returns.
Hoping your week (and mine) improves quickly.
Maxabella says
Your week sounds 9x worse than mine, Raychael. I hope all is well and that next week offers a little quiet time!! x
Mel says
Yes, I remember, final years of High School… “Smells like Teen Spirit” will always have that eerie quality for me…….I had a shocking week last week too, always happens after I’ve been away but throw in Halloween and all the rest and I’ve pretty much run out of puff. Here’s hoping we both have a better week ahead! x
Maxabella says
I’m all outta puff, I’m so lost without it… x
Josefa says
We did the whole walk around the neighbourhood thing wtih four kids aged 7, 6, 5 and 3 on Friday and it was a disaster – one house was nice to house and all the others were quite nasty and to top it off the kids were OVER IT very quickly! I’m thinking a little kid friendly, glass of wine for the adults, nibbles, Halloween shin-dig is the better way to go next year…..hmmmm I might be on to something?
Maxabella says
I’ll be doing a treasure hunt next year, Josefa! I can’t stand the door knocking!!! x
