There has been a big response to our family’s screen freedom quest, so while I’m putting together my ebook on this very subject, I thought I’d introduce a daily tip. This is a tip each morning that will hopefully give you an idea of a few things your family can do each day rather than watch a light box. I’ll put the tip up each day super-early to give you time to plan if you need it. If you read it at 5am when it goes live, you can think of me slumbering blissfully away for another 2 hours at least!!
Instead of screens today…
Instead of screens today, why not write someone a letter?
If your kids are young, you can write it for them and they can add a picture.
If your kids are middling, this will be great handwriting practice for them.
If your kids are older, perhaps they will particularly enjoy it if their someone writes back! You could also introduce your older kids to Postcrossing so they can send their clever thoughts all over the world.
Either way, the kids will love designing their own writing paper with stickers, pictures or photos. Or you could just use cute postcards like the Scatter Love ones in my photo above!
Here are some ideas of people to write to:
- Your gran
- Your cousin
- Your teddy bear
- Your best friend
- Your oldest friend
- Your newest friend
- Your teacher
- Your teacher from last year
- Your father
- Santa
- Someone you love
- Someone you miss
- Someone you are thinking about
- Someone you need to say sorry to
- Someone who isn’t well
- Someone who did something nice for you
Who was the last person you wrote a letter to?

This is a gorgeous idea, def up for trying this. I know my mum would love a letter from the kids.

I think she’d be over the moon, Laney! x

Cute. I still write letters. Mostly to my grandmother because that is her way of emailing but I also have my four year old linked up to a pen pal and he loves receiving mail and responding. A bit of old school never hurt anyone!

A pen pal! It’s been a long time for me and a pen pal, Vicki. I asked my son if he wanted to become a pen pal with his cousin and he said, ‘we email’. It’s not the same thing, but how to show him that? I’m hoping his gran will write him more so he starts to understand the power of waiting for mail! x

Fantastic, fantastic Maxabella, I’ll be following this. My kids do spend too much time in front of screens. When the bigboys were wee boys we were screen free during the week but it’s all collapsed. I have told myself that I can’t do anything about it when I’m solo parenting, and when hubby is home it’s very different. But actually I could if I make it a priority… next term when work is much less… oh get a grip, Smith. You will inspire me and this is much-needed and a universal parent issue.
Maxabella says
It’s a hard thing to remind ourselves about, Seana. We are so consumed with screens these days that it’s easy to forget that there can definitely be too much of a good thing! I just think that kids, especially, and adults too, need to remember that we have all the resources we need within us to make a bloody good life! x

Such a great idea! I still write letters (although very short ones) every so often, but I do love writing and receiving them, so might make time to do it more often 🙂
I still have letters from my now husband from back in the day when we were still in high school ❤
Maxabella says
I bet no one ever treasured an email in quite that way, Jelena!!! x
