The Badoo was a cranky baby. Really, really grumpy. She didn’t smile until she was about ten weeks old and even then it was fleeting. Was it wind? No, no a genuine smile… but that was last week and we haven’t seen another.
I mentioned this distinct lack of mirth to our Paediatrican, Dr Lilystone. Yes, he of the ‘She’s French’ line from the breastfeeding post last week. This time he said to me, “Has she smiled at all?”
“Yes,” I answered. “But not much.”
“Hmmm… well, if she’s come through with a genuine smile or two we can only conclude that it’s not developmental.”
“Okay,” said I, primed for some scary medical explanation. “Then what could it be?”
“She’s grumpy,” he concluded. “Just plain old grumpy.”
Yikes.
And she remained grumpy for about a year.
These days, people comment on how sunny she is. The Badoo, sunny. Who’d have thought?
They say she is smiley, happy, bright and full of beans. They say she’s like a little ray of sunshine. The world smiles on that one, they say.
The Badoo. Really, who’d have thought?

The Badoo – who’d have thought? She’s gorgeous. We always knew she’d come good. And thanks for spreading the Fibro joy.

she must have been saving it up.
you wouldn’t believe it now with that gorgeous smile!

What a sweetie pie! You would never have guessed she was a grump!

Cheery babies are everywhere, there’s something about a discerning “grumpy” baby that kinda sounds sophisticated if you ask me 😉
Anyway, look at her now, what a sunbeam!!! Adorable!
p.s. Thanks for your comment on the Big W model. It gave me a good laugh in return, I had no idea he was a reality TV model. heeee.

Aww! She’s so cute!

Our Big Bro was also a very angry baby. In his case his mood was improved by anti-reflux medication, poor sausage! (He never smiled till after his first dose of Zantac!) But he remained a baby with a temper. At some point the Maternal and Child Health Nurse commented that it’s the babies with attitude that turn into the “lovely” toddlers (hmm, aren’t all toddlers lovely?) and I must say that for whatever reason he blossomed into a very cheery toddler relative to his milder-mannered-as-baby peers. Maybe he realised his attitude didn’t cut mustard with me 🙂
There is an old wives’ tale that placid newborns turn into terror toddlers and vice versa, but again maybe this is all meant to get worn new parents through the screamy nights!!

She is sweet, sweet, sweet. I love your community service announcement here, tis so very, very true. My Bebito was oft rather a crankola and is now far from….apart from when insisting on things being his particular way and throwing tanties of course! 🙂
Heather at Notes From Lapland says
ha ha ha, love your doctors answer. Seems she saving them all up for you, huh? Gorgeous girl.
Jodie at Mummy Mayhem says
Well, you would never have guessed her old grumpiness from THAT photo – that’s for sure. Gorgeous!
Heather says
Well I do not believe that she ever could have been a grumpy child…look at that beautiful grin. Hey she doesn’t have much red in her does she….she looks like she is going to be a little brunette with beautiful streaks of red. x

Gosh I love your blog! What a find. My daughter (now a ray of sunshine) was the crankiest baby and toddler ON EARTH!! She too rarely ever cracked a smile but just like the Badoo, she is now the sunniest child ever! Hopefully it will last through the teenage years … but my guess is not!

That paed sounds brilliant…french & grumpy eh? Too good!!! Glad to know the sun came out eventually. Some days my little Miss E is a grumpy little thing…

Hi!! Thanks for stopping by, I love your blog, too! Loved your ‘what I have learned this week’ list, there were a lot of ‘me toos’ in there.

PS: Little L has been a grumpy baby, especially outside of our house. Never been one to smile at stranger, and at 16 months she still isn’t.
Abby says
Oh, she is just gorgeous! Look at that big smile! I read somewhere the other day that people have the same nature as adults as they do as kids, so if they’re laid back babies, they’ll be laid back forever and likewise for cranky ones. Your Badoo is clearly proof to the contrary, so now there’s hope for all those Mum’s of grumpy little people!

I think I overdosed on the Badoo in the grumpy year. Still think of her like that. Everytime the Minx drops the bottom lip, the Geege says: “Badoooo, what are you up to!”. She has a rep around here! That is a lovely pic of her! Might need one of those for my wall 🙂
Mira Narnie says
It was there all along….her little ray of sunshine, waiting patiently knowing that when she showed it off, it would be marvelled in all its glory and spoken of as truely special! Loving The Badoo pic – she is one sunny girl! xx
Louisa says
That picture completely encompasses the true meaning of the word ‘happy’ x
Kristy says
I know! Our pediatrician said that my boy was a “temperamental” baby and that he would probably always be temperamental. But, he is always so happy! Thank goodness!

When the little princesses were babies (my cousin’s twins that I adore) one was Miss Social and the other one thoughtful, but rarely smiled. Everyone thought she was grumpy too! Now that they are 5 she smiles much more, but only in genuine circumstances, which makes it even more precious.
The other twin is very social and loves to show those dimples all the time.
Love the photo of little Badoo – she’s just glowing!
Such gentleness and sweetness in those eyes.

She is gorgeous, love the dress she is wearing in the picture. Sounds she is a bit like my Skye. If anything the older she has gotten the less grumpy is she.

What a perfect shot of her joy. I love it. It’d make an awesome poster shot. Such pretty eyes too.

Hello! I found you via the lovely Deerbaby… Nice to meet you.
That’s a sunny, happy girl indeed. I had one just like that: Discontent, uncomfortable, irritable, sleepless, fretful. It drained the life out of me.
But by the time she passed babyhood and toddlerhood, she became one of the happiest, sunniest, sweetest-natured children I’ve ever met.
A friend told me “she just didn’t like being a baby.”
