At her recent Christening, The Badoo received a Tinkerbell dress, DVD and doll from her Zia Lucia.* Maxi-Taxi was fascinated by the story on the DVD and then overjoyed when he discovered that Cappers already owned two Tinkerbell dolls. Instantly, he had three fairy dolls, which is all Maxi-Taxi needs to be off and away into the Land of Imagination. That boy just loves a Collection.
This morning he cautiously asked what I thought of him taking the fairy Collection into school to play with at Big Lunch. The conversation went a little like this:
M-T: I’m thinking of taking in the Fairy Collection to school to play with at Big Lunch.
Me: That sounds fun. (Thinking: Oh dear lord, does he not want any friends?)
M-T: Well, I don’t think the boys will want to play with them…
Me: Hmmmm… maybe not. (Are you crazy? I’m not usually hung-up on gender specific toys, but believe me you’ll be the laughing stock of the entire boy part of the school!)
M-T: They might laugh at me.
Me: They might. (What, is he reading my mind now? He’s SUCH a strong, confident, loving… of course he’s not reading my mind… different child…)
M-T: I could play by myself, or with the girls… no, not with the girls, but by myself.
Me: Yes, that could be fun. (There is nothing wrong with playing by yourself at school. There is nothing wrong with playing by yourself at school. There is…)
M-T: So should I take them in?
Me: Well, you know the boys might laugh and want to play something else but you’ve decided you could play by yourself… so you can make your mind up knowing what you know.
M-T: Okay, I’ll take them in.
Me: Good decision (Oh no). You’ll enjoy playing with them (ALONE). Just grab a bag to put them in… ah, okay, the pink bag is a good idea. (Forgodsake we have to have a pink bag too!?). Enjoy yourself, Sonshine.
And off to school he went.
* Zia never misses an extravagant gifting opportunity!
Apparently, the boy brigade couldn’t get enough of them…

EDIT: Yay we found the source of this fab photo. It’s by Scott Wills and the sweet fairy dust was made by his talented wife Thanks for letting me know. Tumblr and weheartit are the place to go for unsourced photos. Not good!

What a gorgeous boy you have. Maybe he will have a little play with them and then a play with the boys?? I look forward to hearing how it all goes.
Anna Walker says
I want to know how he’s doing too! ๐
I am sure it will be fine, but I am sure you know, that they will probably come back a little (or a lot) dirty!
PS I LOVE that picture!

tee hee what a cute conversation! in the 5 year old class i teach in on a tuesday there’s a lovely boy who loves drawing flowers and butterflies and plays mostly with the girls at morning tea and lunch time. He’s a very popular kid though with the boys and girls and a is a real happy wee fellow. hope your boy has a good day today ๐
Deb says
oh the wee darling! please keep us posted I’m on tender hooks now ๐
Toni says
fingers crossed.
I hope the boys are cool with it. LOVE the way you handled this.
DaniV says
You handled it great! You allowed him to think it through, knowing all the facts and make a decision on his own!
It’s hard because we want to wrap our children in cotton wool and for them to not get hurt but in the long run we are doing them a diservice because the ‘real’ world is not all butterflies & rainbows. Dealing with things now gives them the tools to be successful, resilient adults!
Heather says
Bless him! How I love that boy of yours. Our eldest two are just so similar. I know you will be thinking about him all day. I will be too now. Let us know how he goes. xxx
Jodie at Mummy Mayhem says
Ah yes. Isn’t it a shame that they learn so early about boys vs girls etc? Good on him though for deciding to brave it. My 6yo loves to play with the girls. My 8yo teases him relentlessly about it. I just tell him it’s perfectly ok if he wants to play with them, but of course, I hope he also hangs with the dudes too. For his sake.
I’m sure he’ll be fine…but we’ll need an update!
life in a pink fibro says
Knowing Maxi, he’ll have them all playing with fairies. Or wishing they were brave enough to do so. xx
Kirsty says
and that is what makes you a great mum. x
m.e (Cathie) says
awww, we don’t have gender specific issues either & Aidan loves to prance about in a pink sparkly tulle skirt.
he’ll be fine, young & innocent, just wonderful!
let us know how he goes.

Yay for both of you….what a strong minded young boy you have there in Maxi Taxi and even though he is pre-empting what his friends might do – he did what he wanted anyway!! Power to him. Don’t know if i was ever that strong!!! Can’t wait to hear the result of the day. Good on you for supporting him too! ;-))
Being Me says
Very sweet boy. I hope it is a positive experience he shares with you when he gets home today.
Penny says
What a great way to handle the situation and let him decide. Dying to know how his day went!
Curvaceous Queen says
I’m sure he not only rocked the Tinkerbell circle but he’s got a whole class of converts.
Kelly says
aww, what a sweetie. It’s a crue world isn’t it when we have to worry how our child will be treated at school doing something they want to do that might not seem popular with the others.
My son when through a phase where he wanted to wear hair clips like his sisters do, it was tough trying to explain to him he couldn’t because he was a boy. Maybe I should have handled it like you did.
Glen says
that is so like my youngest – he wanted to check the other day “It IS okay for boys to marry boys isn’t it Dad?” then came home with a pink book of fairies from the school library. Bless them all.
_vTg_ says
So?? Hope it all went well. Hope the other little boys were able to de-repress themselves and enjoy the fun of Tinkie and her buddies…
This whole “boys can do X, boys can’t do Y” is an interesting thing. Out of interest, what would you do in a couple of years when Cappers wants to take Transformers to school? I am sure there are much fewer gender-restricted things for girls. Though, having two boys maybe I just miss it.
I think school is a whole different kettle of fish to the sheltered world of daycare, but at the moment I have been trying to get Big Bro to not be phased by what other kids say (his little friend Julia of “Collingwood are for girls” being my main nemesis). But I guess one day I will have to switch my message to “other people think….”, even if I qualify it with “but we know that’s not true”. Oh dear, what will the world come to…?

Wow, I haven’t read in a long time. DANG! (I’ve skipped out on reading most blogs the last few months, quite honestly; know that it’s not for lack of caring, but just because I’ve been uber busy!)
I’m dying to know what happened…

Lucky boy, to have a mum who can edit her words and allow him to make tough choices! Hope it went well…pink bag and all.

Awesome news that the Battleaxe Fairies were a hit – its not the toy, its how you rock it!
My son asked me to curl his hair this weekend…. I’m just trying to work out how to do it without his father freaking!

Toni says
I can see a whole range of Battleaxe Fairies coming out by Christmas. And one of them should be named Maxi.
Excellent outcome ๐
Drama queens mum (Kimberly) says
That’s so funny. My daughter loves Tinkerbell & keeps asking me if I have any fairy dust. I have some body glitter that you put on with 1of those big poofy things. I put some in her hair & on her face for a Halloween event & she thinks it is fairy dust. About me being a Mum & not a Mom (haha) I actually call my Mom, Mum. I don’t know why I say it like that. I also thought it was different.
Posie Patchwork says
They can surprise you can’t they?? My son has been caught playing beautifully with a doll or 3 & when you ask sweetly what the story is, well, it can be zoombie princess or they’ve been kidnapped. Nice!! Love Posie
Our Park Life says
i taught a 7 year old boy who loved to dress up in the fairy costume from the dress up box…..This was fine except for his mother rocking up in the afternoon and yelling at him in front of the whole room to take “that bloody thing off”…The poor boy was so embarrassed…
good on you for “doing the right thing” even when your inner mind was worrying…i love how MAXI TAXI knew what to expect but did what he wanted anyway….What an awesome little guy…this takes more guts than most adults have!
