When I was a teenage misfit in my beachy-country-westie hometown, I got really into Cold Chisel in a big way. (Okay, so maybe not such a misfit after all.) Their music grabbed me at sixteen and it’s still grabbing me today.
I think when I was a squeaky-clean youngster it was all about the promise of a life that seemed so grown-up and a bit grubby. It appealed to my Vader Side – that reckless, wandering side of me that has always been there and would later be brightened occasionally by hard drink and loud music and late, late nights.
These days it’s just that I know their music so well that I think I’m in the band.
What music makes you nostalgic for your youth?

The coffee’s hot and the toast is brown.
Love Chisel. Memories of my somewhat (but not entirely) misspent youth.
Thank you.

The Cure and The Violent Femmes.
yesterday I had an hour at home alone and I did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom with the Cure and then the Femmes pumping. I’m telling you I still remembered every word and I danced. Such fun.
Mama Mogantosh says
Kate, yes! I’m digging out some Femmes tomorrow for a cleaning frenzy. Also maybe some Depeche Mode…
Diminishing Lucy says
I ran on the treadmill earlier to the J Guiles Band and a little bit of U2.
It made me yearn for high school again.

A Cold Chisel fan? I don’t think I can be your friend any more LOL
I’m with Kate for The Cure and Violent Femmes, might put them on tomorrow! But I wouldn’t say I was ‘young’ when I remember them… more like the clubbing I used to do 5 years ago.
Music that makes me nostalgic for my youth? Y’know, I thought about that for a good 30 seconds and I’d have to honestly say that I’ve had more fun in the last 10 years than I had in my “youth” so I don’t really get nostalgic for it.

Yay. New bands for me to check out: Cold Chisel, The Cure, The Violent Femmes.
I love ‘old’ music but I don’t mind some songs that are made today.
Music that makes me nostalgic for my youth… well, hearing new theme songs for TV shows that I used to watch as a kid. The old theme songs are just better π
E.g. Pokemon
Music that will probably make me nostalgic when I’m older: The Runaways, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, Bryan Adams, Lionel Richie π

Love it!
Mama of 2 boys says
Chisel rock! I grew up with them, booming from my brother’s rooms, as they got ready to hit the town on a Fri & Sat night. Oh, it was 80’s cool all the way. I love Flame Trees.
Others that make me nostalgic for my youth/childhood are Midnight Oil, INXS, Australian Crawl, Icehouse… I’ve gotta stop there, could I get any more occa?!
Naturally Carol says
I was a seventies teen..so Elton John’s album Yellow Brick Road was the best, Chigago, dare I say..Abba and the BeeGees! Then when I met my husband he was into Pink Floyd and Yes and Deep Purple! I thought Lou Reed was terribly dark and daring music too..Walk on the Wild Side!
IAMJOROSS says
None π Still enjoying youth… Youth ROCKS π

I can’t think of one other than Elvis. I have loved all types of music and not one group sticks out more than another. Elvis though has always been the one throughout my life. And he’s been dead for more than 34 years.

Yes! Love Cold Chisel!!! Khe Sanh was my favourite song in the world, especially when I was at uni. Those Bar nights rocked with Khe Sanh blaring through the jukebox;) I also loved….John Farnham. And I’m proud to say it!! lol I loved Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan and Neil Young (my mum and dad’s fault for the last 2 and they are still my favourites now I’m an oldie). The Eagles. Dr Hook for awhile (that one I’m not so proud to say out loud). Aussie Crawl was a biggy. Loved them. John Cougar. Oh the nostalgia…it’s all flooding back to me. i’ll be thinknig about this all day now.
Thanks for the lovely wander back in time xx

Pearl Jam… Yep, a grunge chick of the nineties… Just the first few bars of some of their songs whiz me back to ’93 and ’94… The power of music is incredible.
Thanks for the post! Going to see if I can make me file of all my old favourites.

SHUT. UP.
I am currently in a Chisel retrospective myself and Breakfast at Sweethearts is TOP of the list. Followed shortly by Bow River, live version OF COURSE. As a young gal (prob 14) it totally captured my heart too, and has stayed with me ever since. Such GOOD songs. Such storytellers. Man, LOVE Chisel. Mrs Woog and I discussed this matter on the way to Top 50 Bloggers actually. We are indeed soul sisters Bron.
I also CANNOT get enough of Fleetwood Mac Sara at the moment. It is just SO BLOODY GOOD. Do yourself a favour and get it on. Loudly. Oh Stevie…

I am very into 80’s music, being an 80’s child. But a song that always takes me back and has be saying “Remember this song?” Is Walking in Memphis.
I was actually named after a song.

Oh boy! Journey, Bob Seeger, Styx, Foreigner…so many good ones! How obnoxious we must have been driving around, windows down, stereo cranked so loud the car vibrated and yet, we were lovin life!!

Being a child of the 90’s, Britney, the Backstreet Boys and SClub7 make me wish I was eight again. Utterly embarrassing. xxx

Reading this actually reminded me that I had a dream last night about the 90’s band “Girlfriend”. They were the Spice Girls of Australia for all of 2 or so years! π I loved them!
But of course my number one would be Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Baby and Posh themselves. I was in early High School and dressed myself like Baby Spice all the time.
I went to their concert at O2 in London in 2008 – AMAZING!
Think I’ll go and pop some music on… xx
Hi I'm Rhonda. says
I will definitely have to check them out…I love The Cure and Femmes. Joan Jett. Although she was a little before me. In actuality things like M C Hammer and Depeche Mode, Boys to Men were popular when I was a kid!

Self confessed 80s dag here. Wham and Spandau Ballet.
Violent Femmes brings back many a memory as it was my Uni (then hubby and my) “fire up music”
Funny enough, we stopped using it as fire up music about 8 years ago (= birth of first child)
Partly because that was the end of any social life that required firing up for and partly because “Why can’t I get just one screw?” wasn’t really what we thought our child should be singing while everyone else’s was singing “Incy Wincey Spider”…
Cate says
My hubby would say violent femmes – but then he loves to annoy me! I would say U2 Angel of Harlem…reminds me of yr11 π

Hah! Have you seen my progressive list of my favourite 100 LPs lately?
But seriously, there’s so much music from all over time that I love – Chisel included (I own pretty much everything they ever recorded).
But here’s a song that always takes me back to that magical Newcastle summer of 1985/6, when I was 9:
Tears for Fears – “Head Over Heels”

Not a huge fan of Cold Chisel, although I can appreciate their contribution to Australian music history and culture. My favourites from my youth would have to be New Order, Depeche Mode, The Pet Shop Boys and The Cure.

Makes me nostalgic too…hunters and collectors, a bit of Sting, INXS, U2 and many other bands/songs that I would never admit in a public forum. Oh okay then….Neil Diamond, kenny rogers…oh god I can not believe I admited that!!!!!!! Tragic. xx
Faith Hope and a whole lotta Love says
oh anything 80’s….seriously was there a better era?!! π
Sandra says
WOW!
Good for you for admitting you love Chisel!
I was on a bus trip recently and the guide had a wide range of tapes playing…Chisel came on, and as we’re driving through Tumut (which was in full Autumn glory) Flame Trees started playing…I was in heaven.
By the fifth song, mutterings of “bogan” etc were being heard and one woman actually asked for the tape to be changed…
Hubby plays in a covers band, and he does a mean version of Bow River and Khe Sanh…
Love your style, Maxabella!x
