Please stop the madness! Don’t make me type nonsense words that I can’t actually read anyway. I love your blog to bits, but I am so utterly tired of typing painstaking nonsense. I do enough of that on my own blog.

It’s so easy to remove the word verification off your Blogger blog and I’ve never had a problem with spam since I did. Believe me!
Ipprn quimpl ghde ribe.
Here’s how you do it.
If you are using the ‘new look’ Blogger interface, you’ll need to go back to the old Blogger interface (at least, that’s the only way I know how to do it…). Just click on the little steering wheel looking thingy (technical term) on the RHS of the new interface. This will take you to your old-school Dashboard.
Click on ‘Settings’, then ‘Comments’ then scroll down to ‘Show word verification for comments’ and click select ‘Absolutely, you bet, please get rid of these ridiculous words from my precious blog because they are making people not want to leave a comment because it’s all too hard and they are weeping, weeping I tell you’ (or you could just click ‘No’) and you’re done!
I also have ‘Comment moderation’ set on my blog for posts older than 3 days. This is mainly so I never miss a comment, but I think it’s a good back up so that spam doesn’t get sprinkled across your older posts. You can delete them as they come in. I have done that an astounding 3 times in the seven whole months that I haven’t had word veri on. The spam catcher gets pretty much all of the spam whether you have word veri on or not…
So, there you have it.
Pretty please?

hahaha here here!! I hate those bloody things! x
Alison says
I didn’t even know I had the awful thing on a default setting – but no more. Thank you for your concise instructions!
Toni says
GOD BLESS YOUR BEAUTIFUL PINK SOCKS, Bron.
I HATE that thing so much.
Shelley @ My Shoebox Life says
You’re definitely talking in a foreign language to me – I use WordPress! hehe x
Miss Pink says
You know a few months ago I was getting about 10 spam comments on my blog a day. Now it’s about 3. But for over a year I didn’t get a single spam comment.
It’s not hard, just delete them if you happen to get them, and honestly, it’s just phases. Kinda like twitter spam I guess.
And, I never get spam on my recent posts, usually on my really old one’s. Weird huh?
But I do agree. Turn the stupid catpha off. It stops me commenting.
Happylan says
I used to do ok when I came across word verification, it was annoying but it accepted me! These days I have been having no luck at all – comment after comment would not be accepted! I have found that if I use username/URL instead of trying to use my WordPress identity it lets me pass. But yes, still a helluva lot easier when word veri is not asked for.
ClaireyHewitt says
I have had to give up,unless the post is amazing, the word veri, now always two words, and words I can’t read has defeated me.
Sammie says
Oh my god yes!!! I’m so with you.
I just don’t bother if there’s word veri.
I never had it and never had any problems.
Fiona says
I totally agree Bron, particularly in the past month as word verification has doubled and become almost impassable. I too, have moderation on posts older than a couple of days. Helps keep track, as I tend not to look back at older posts. More power to you!
Polly says
Oh yay, I hate those things too, they hurt my eyes.
Cherie @ 'a baby called Max' says
I have to passionately love the post to submit to word verification.
Thankyou for posting this!
Bloggers take note!
By the time I actually leave a comment on a word verification required post, I’m already half irritated.
Maybe that makes me arrogant, but it’s just a pet peeve!
melissa says
Thank you for posting this Bron! I’m being driven insane by those crazy words I never get right!
emma @ frog, goose and bear says
I finally got rid of mine a little while ago. I hung on for so long because I hated the spam email that I was getting, it just made me feel really gross. Even though the spam doesn’t make it to the blog, it still gets emailed to me! However, I just got rid of “anonymous” commenter option and that seems to have done the trick. My Mum has her own blog now so I don’t need to have it open anymore. The word veri has become impossible recently! I second your plea!
sarah braaksma says
drives me absolutely batty! glad I turned mine off.. I hate trying to comment on a great post and the word thingo comes up! i really dont have time to work out the jibjab!!
Leanne says
Totally agree, I dont get spam either.
Felicity says
Ditto!
I’ve just reposted this on my blog – fingers crossed!

Little Pinwheel says
you freaked me out… I thought, damn, do I have that thingy on, and phew I didn’t! I have wrestled with a few of these random words and letters, and some I have not been able to read!
xx
Sarah says
I hate it with a passion too and have never had it on my blog. I think I’ve had 2 bits of spam make it through onto a post.
I also can’t do word veri from my phone – even if it’s correctly spelt Blogger doesn’t recognise it – I don’t think I’ve ever gone back from my PC to try to repost a comment when this has happened.
Take it OFF!!!! …. pleeease
Jane says
Ah Bron. You know I’m with you, Baby! J x
Coal Valley View says
It’s gone! I had no idea I even had it. You would think you would have to actively enable this feature rather than have it as the default setting. There have actually been many many times I’ve commented and gone away only to find that the comment didn’t go through because didn’t do that verification thing and then I didn’t bother. Thanks so much!
Nat - Muddy Farmwife says
Can’t stand word veri, especially when using the iPad.
About time someone took a stand, Thanks Bron.
Jenny says
Yes! Here here! Totally!!
I spend much too much time getting the word verifications wrong.
All power to moderation rather than verification!
Kelly says
Oh yes it kills me everytime I try to comment on a blog with the word veri on!
Anonymous says
Please!
I do not comment on blogs with it. Just cannot. Detest xxx
Mrs Woog says
That anon commenter was me x

Most annoying, those captcha things!
Tenille @ My Family Table says
Amen! Those ridiculous things shit me to tears! I copped three of those horrible buggers in a row this morning, all on Blogger blogs. Bleurgh!
Tania says
I actually did that yesterday and then received emails saying “I can’t leave a comment” so turned Verification Hell back on. But sod it, I say. Those sfhdgf words are driving me psycho. And I don’t need additional guilt, (on top of general Mama guilt), for driving everyone else around the bloomin’ bend.
The Hesitant Housewife says
Thanks for sharing! I’m a bit clueless, an didn’t even realise this was happening!! Thanks so much! xx
Life In A Pink Fibro says
You is singin’ to the choir sister… It’s even on Facebook these days. I can’t even post on my own page half the time because I can’t READ the veri.
Michelle says
Oh wow! Thanks for the tutorial 🙂 I have now discovered some other things I could change like the reply word on my comments…Soooooo much easier. (Happy new blogger)
tahlia @ the parenting files says

I’ve just got rid of mine too! I think it definitely puts people off commenting. Silly thing!
Leanne says
OK! Ok. I did it. I’ve removed it. Just to please the masses. But how will we ever make up new and interesting definitions to these crazy words without word verification?
Lisa @ HomeWorkMum says
Yes!! I can’t even understand the writing sometimes, and just give up.
Kelly @ Polkadot Lane says
I was sure I had turned this off but alas, when I checked just now, the blasted word veri was ticked as ‘yes’…not any longer! Thanks for the reminder to check it out Bron x
A Dose of Dannie says
I took mine off ages ago i don’t see much difference . Yes the words where impassable to read at times ,and i still get spam here and there but cie le vie lol
Sonia @ Life Love and Hiccups says
HALLELUAH!!! Thank you, I go crazy at night in bed trying to leave a comment on a post I desperately want to comment on, but I cant read that friggen Captcha words. It gets to the point I just don’t comment if they have it. xx
Super Ordinary Mum says
Ditto what they all said. Hate word veri…. thanks! Sooz
Amy says
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The new word verification on blogger blogs has been doing my head in!
LionessLady says
Going to turn mine off right now Bron! I hate it these days – now we get two crazy words to type in when we want to comment!!!
Heather says
What i find most annoying is that much of the time I can not actually even read them. I have one go and then give up with the comment.
joeh says
OK, I took it off and got a spam comment which listed 4 porno sights. No I did not check them, I can get porn from safe sights. It took about 5 seconds to delete.
Cranky Old Man
Lisa H says
I don’t have the word veri thing, and I’ve only had a couple of spam comments. They are: A)So easy to spot and B) so easy to delete. What’s the point of putting off real comments just for something as simple as that?
Elisa {with grace and eve} says
Thank you! Blogger tips are the best! Using the new dashboard, and had no idea how to do that. Big thanks! xx

I just took mine off x
Amanda says
Agreed!! Those words just seem to be getting trickier and trickier lately 🙂
Catherine says
They are not fun anymore half the time I get them wrong now. x
Rhonda says
I second this motion! I also like your tip about comment moderation on posts over 3 days old! I feel like I miss a lot of comments, especially on posts I link up with Weekend Rewind. I’m terribly forgetful and I forget to check!!!
Brenda @ Mira Narnie says
Yes please for the love of all blogs, get rid of word Veri!!!!
Kat @ I Saw You Dancing says
Cor! Never though about this before, but BY GOLLY you’re right!
Thanks for the prompt.
xx
Milina says
Couldn’t agree more. But do some people actually realise they have them?
Anna @ green tea n toast says
SO with you. They are so annoying. I also have had hardly any spam since turning mine off. Hope this works and there are less of them around from now on!
Being Me says
My darling, I do love you. But on this, I cannot agree. I turned off my word veri last time you asked me. The spam ever since DID MY FRIGGING FRAZZLED HEAD. IN. I had to turn it back on… at least I think I did…. Hmm. Maybe I never figured out how to turn it back on.
Perhaps I should check: Are you talking about me? (after all, that IS who this is all about ;-P)
Calico Child says
Gosh I must be such a rubbish blogger I didnt even know I could change this setting thanks for that :)))
Sally says
Done.
Vanessa says
Thank you. Oh thank you. Am horrified. Have been complaining about other people’s blogs with it, only to discover that mine has it too. Switched off now.
