Last week Cappers’ (currently known as Gappers for obvious reasons…) class went to the Ryde School House on excursion. I would love to have been one of the ‘excursion mums’ on this one, but alas, work saw me too busy to volunteer.
Gappers had two observations of the day worth noting.
“It was really hard to play tennis in my dress”
and
“It was so hard to write with the ink pots and not spill it on my dress”.
Both fantastic observations of why it’s nice to be a little girl (not to mention a little girl’s hand-washing mother) in 2013 and not in 1813. Fact is, Gappers would probably not even be at school in 1813, given that we would have had to send her down the salt mines in order to make a buck or two.
I’m very glad she managed to keep the ink off that beautiful dress. It was made by my lovely friend Jen, who is the sort of mum who gets out the needle and painstakingly recreates an ‘old school’ dress when a school excursion calls for one. Jen is such an insanely beautiful seamstress that this dress is wonderful to even hold, let alone wear.
You can imagine how proud Gappers was on the day.
The excursion to Ryde School House is such a lovely tradition at our school. The kids talk about it for ages and Gappers has even requested jacks for her birthday this year.
“Jacks, just like you played with in the olden days, Mumma,” she said with pride.
What could I say? I did indeed love playing jacks in the olden days. I really, truly did.
[…] (see above), setting off on a school excursion to Ryde Old School House this week. It’s the same dress Cappers wore two years ago and seeing them in the same dress shows me just how beautifully different each of my girls is. […]
