I went to the accountant for the first time ever this week. Eek. I have always done my own tax returns, but ever since accidentally starting my own business, I’ve been drowning in all the numbers. I’m hopeless at the numbers.
The thing is, when you’re earning your living from writing mostly about your life, what is and isn’t an expense gets really complicated. Hopefully I’ve been sorted out now, but my accountant (I like how that sounds – “my accountant”) summed it up when she looked up from tapping away on her calculator and said, “You and I are really at the opposite ends of the career spectrum, aren’t we?”
We are! One accounting session and I had to go eat a big, fat burger at The Grounds to recover (you can check out the review I wrote for families over at Seana’s site).
Here are some lovely or helpful or otherwise bloggy things I noticed this week:
The Gap by Ira Glass (I found it via One Claire Day) is a must-see for anyone with a creative dream or really just anyone (because we all have creative dreams, right?).
Build a community in four basic steps. (Should I do a Maxabella loves… newsletter? I think I would like to!)
Do you care about your Klout score? (Mine is currently sitting at 56… which I don’t think is terribly exciting.)
64 tips to increase your blog’s reach.(Number 1 is “create quality content”… yep, still king.)
Last week I really enjoyed reading:
About Jodi’s ‘One Word’ check in – go girl!
About Jane’s experience of Anxiety (which I read at about the time I was writing about mine).
About Jodi’s efforts to simplify her home (because I am always about that, one way or another!)
About Mel’s brush with politics (and mainly because it was so nice to see Mel! Hi!)
And I enjoyed my trip to the ice hockey with Holly very much!
Happy reading!
