We went to Scouts family camp last weekend. It was… interesting. Of course, it wasn’t actually camping as we stayed in bunk house (I don’t think I’m really ready for Scouts camping camping). It rained all weekend, but we still managed to do Scouty things like canoeing and bonfires. There were skits and songs and it was all very Kumbaya. I was actually quite disappointed when nobody actually sang Kumbaya.
Max will soon be moving up from Cubs to Scouts and has just been awarded his Gold Boomerang. I don’t quite know what that means either, but it’s good. He’s also one bush walk away from securing his Grey Wolf, which is apparently the highest Cub honour you can get. I should really have written that Bart is one bush walk away from securing Max his Grey Wolf. Max is not exactly self-motivated to achieve greatness…
Do wish them luck for the walk on Sunday. Max is in charge of the whole thing himself, including organising supplies for six Cubs, deciding the route and being responsible for directions. Oh yes! I half expect to never see them again.
Other things that had me this week:
Reading – Ignore Everybody: and 39 other keys to creativity by Hugh MacLeod. It’s making me spark.
Writing – my 7 favourite book series to read aloud with the kids.
Making – Rainbow clean mud – clean mud is a thing!
Wishing – that this kind of yumminess didn’t make us fat.
Loving – the fantastic reaction the #screenfreedom movement is generating. Loving it, loving it, loving it.
Wondering – how my mean budget is going to survive the Easter Show Me The Money on Sunday!!!
This week’s guest hostie is the fabulous Amanda from Cooker and a Looker. She’s absolutely both of those things (she will be embarrassed that I said that) but she’s also funny, warm and the right kind of joyfully silly. If it’s food you’re after, don’t miss her Pink Lemonade Scones, Lemon Meringue Cake (wha!?!) or her free eCookbook (named Flossie… which sounds a bit rude if you’re my Grandma). Amanda is a total love, so pop on over and say hello!
Happy reading.

Clean mud!! Wow!
My lot love organized camps. Only one opted for brownies and is now in guides- I think it’s great- they get loads out of it!
Very exciting. Our Miss now 15, achieved her Grey Wolf a few years back. She was the first girl in her scouts group to do so. Very proud (step) mummy moment.
Thank you so much for having me and for your very kind words. I didn’t know I was joyful silly, but you have nailed it. It makes me very happy being silly!
I’ll have my fingers and toes crossed for Max on Sunday. I am Grey Wolf, hear me roar… err… howl!
Go Max! Gosh it sounds like he is kicking butt in the Scouts world! I used to do Brownies when I was younger and loved it. I remember having a ‘teddy bear camp’ in one of those big bunk houses too!
Good luck for Sunday fellas! I love how you all got involved in the camp, Bron, so exciting for the kids. Have a glorious weekend xx
That sounds impressive! Go Max (and Bart)!
We aren’t a scouting family so this all means nothing to me but it sounds impressive 🙂 Pink Lemonade Scones on the other hand mean a whole lot so I’m off to check them out on the lovely Amanda’s blog x
I love that Cubs and Scouts still exist. Anything to get kids outside, learning skills and being away from screens I say (and I know you!) … I’m not surprised they didn’t sing Kumbaya. Would the kids even know what that song is anymore? x
I just had to click on the Rainbow Clean Mud link and it wasn’t even the ‘clean mud’ part that got me in. It was the ‘rainbow’
oh Bravo to Max…and Bart…and best wishes for a sparkling Sunday. We were a scouting & guiding family (Mum and Dad met in the 1940s thanks to the scouting movement on South Coast – Mt Keira scout camp). However, I am a non-camping person. Oh, yes indeed. So I survived one guide camp in pouring rain at Marshall Mount near Dapto as a 12 year old and that was it! Congrats to you for surviving a wet weekend out of your” comfort zone “too…. Denyse
Good luck Max. I’m sure they will have a great time, Scouts and Guides are great organisations. I love the skills, values and activities. I was a Guide leader for 9 years and really enjoyed it. X
We are a scouting family too Bron. I had parent helper duty just this week, we did some Easter craft. We haven’t had a family camp brought to our attention, sounds like lots of fun. I’m not ready for the whole send our Mr almost 10 off to camp on his own either.
Have a great weekend.
I wish Max all the luck and fine weather in the world en route to achieving his Grey Wolf…neither of my boys were into cubs/scouts so have no idea what a Grey Wolf is but am sure it keeps Max happy and active and will look good on his resume! x
This is all in the future for me and mine! Good luck for tomorrow:)
Have you finished reading the book? Do you recommend I download it? Hmm is it available on Kindle?
Hope Max’s walk goes well and that he’s King of the Cubs. That Rainbow Mud is quite a revelation – who knew? I feel a bit shortchanged because I’ve never been a brownie or been to the Easter show, but at least I’ve sung Kumbayah. More than once! Have a beautiful weekend xx
Yes, camping camping is a bit too much reality to bear in one weekend… especially if you don’t have an automatic self-pumping air mattress! Best of luck to the imminent Grey Wolf!
That actually sounds really cool! Can girls be cubs/scouts now? When I was a kid it was Brownies and Girl Guides, but I never hear them mentioned any more? Good luck to Max on Sunday! xx
Go Max you awesome boy you. Tell him, I think he is something pretty special OK xx
Cubs and Scouts are in my foreseeable future – I just know it. Give me strength! (although I know the kids will absolute love it – such a positive activity for them). Kids books are a major weakness of mine and I love your post on read-aloud series for kids, Some fantastic titles there xx
Well the sun appears to be shining so fingers crossed for the walk today. I have fond memories of my Brownie Days – must check out if we have a local one around here for my girls. Off to look into all these amazing links.
Not to wish my time with my girls away, but I secretly can wait until they are a little independent. I hope Max has fun while navigating his group on the walk. I always enjoy your weekly roundup posts and I glad you got Amanda to host this week. She really is gorgeous inside and out!
Ahh yes, I remember camping…glad I don’t have to anymore 😉 X
I hope the work went well, cubs and clubs are such good ways to teach kids to be responsible. My daughter joined the choir and didn’t want to go last and I said that was okay and then realised that it wasn’t. She chose to do it and has to stick with it, one you commit to something you have to keep going and I told her so. Have a great Monday x
Some interesting clicks on your list, I am getting lost down the Internet rabbit hole and getting nothing done. Thank you – I think. 🙂
So how did they go?!! (I’m assuming Max and friends made it home safe and sound 🙂
They made it home… I think he’s done it… hopefully!
Good luck Max (and Bart), gosh I love the mental image of have of your Max 🙂
Why, oh why, do you people always think we sing Kumbayah? Why? I can teach you the song and action to Baby Shark, and the Bear Song is always a hit, by Kumbayah? Nup. Not at Guide camp.
