It goes without saying that the Badoo requested the Mars Bar slice to take into school for her recent birthday. I was still reeling after Max’s birthday as at least half the class sent home requests from their mum for the recipe.
“Um, yeah, there’s nothing good in there,” I told the mums.
“It’s a treat, I know,” the mums answered, but when I started talking about adding butter to a considerable number of Mars Bars I could sense that they were going to blame me for their child’s hardened arteries in twenty years time. The recipe was hastily stuffed into many a handbag, probably never to see the light of day again.
SO, when it was Badoo’s turn to take in a birthday treat to school, I cheated a little and made this surprisigly healthy rice bubbly slice and guess what… she didn’t even notice it wasn’t the Mars Bar slice. How could she not notice? But she didn’t, so that’s a huge win, right?
Naturally, not a single mother from the Badoo’s class contacted me for this recipe. I was waiting and waiting, ready to swoop in with my “you won’t believe how healthy this slice is” line. Not a single mother. I am tempted to send in a typed version of the recipe on cards… just to show off.
Good-for-you chocolate crackle slice
2 cups brown rice puffs
1/2 cup desiccated coconut
1/2 cup maple syrup (honey also good)
3 tablespoons of organic raw cacao
125 gm organic coconut oil, melted
1/2 cup dark chocolate pieces (optional)
Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl until completely combined.
Press firmly into a 20 x 20 cm slice tin using the back of a metal spoon.
Refrigerate for at least an hour until firm (overnight okay). Slice into preferred size and serve.
You could also spoon the mix into patty cake cases to make ‘traditional’ chocolate crackles.

Well now I like the look of that, never heard of brown rice pops, but can’t see why I can’t use white, reckon I could use cocoa instead of cacao cause that’s what I’ve got;)
Reckon this could be gf too which means the gf child can eat like the rest:) Win, win.
In the midst of our mega birthday week here (3 in 1 deal) reckon that’s cause to make these:)
Maxabella says
Rice bubbles will do the trick and I barely know the difference between cocoa and cacao (is it just me or do others think it’s really just a word jumble?!). Happy birthdays at your place, Erin. x
mel @ loved handmade says
This sounds great, I’ll be trying this one for sure! Thanks Bron x
Maxabella says
The kids will thank you for it Mel (they should!). x
Sequins & Sand says
Even though I’ll make this as a treat for the kids, I know that I will end up eating some of it as well. Glad to know that the ingredients are healthier so I won’t feel guilty when I step out in style with my plus size Swimwear
Maxabella says
No guilt at all! Some things are worth getting fat for IMO!! x
Sarah @theroutinequeen.net says
So trying this recipe, thanks for sharing!

It’s a good one, Sarah. x
Caz Filmer says
Excellent recipe. I shall steal it and make it myself 🙂
Maxabella says
Do it, you’ll love it, Caz. x
Lauren @ Create Bake Make says
I think you should totally make recipe cards for this one! The boys kindy do the whole bring a cake in for your birthday but neither have actually attended the week of their birthday!
Maxabella says
That’s probably a good thing, Lauren! I can’t imagine the amazing concoction you would send in, to the envy of every other parent in the class. x
Sammie @ The Annoyed Thyroid says
Of course everyone should have some cake and eat it on my birthday, because a birthday without cake is just a meeting! Either way you make this slice it sounds totes delicious! Hope happy birthdays were had by all…
Maxabella says
Everyone needs cake to share on their birthday – so true!!! x
Nancy | Plus Ate Six says
Their loss 🙂 Looks fab. Would’t last too long in this house that’s for sure.
Maxabella says
It did not last at ours, thats for sure… x
Dannielle@Zamamabakes says
That’s definitely a huge win that Badoo didn’t notice.
How funny about the Mars Bar number, that slice truly is a show stopper I haven’t met a person who doesn’t enjoy a slice when it’s on offer, can see why the kids would have been telling their parents about it.
Loving that you’ve come up with this healthy option, I’ll be testing it out on the kidlets very soon.
Thanks for bringing such deliciousness to our Fabulous Foodie Fridays party.
Have a beautiful weekend lovely xx
PS – Yes our school does the everyone gets cake because it’s your birthday thing too. We did Marshmallow pops for Mr 10 earlier this year, they were a great hit.
Maxabella says
Marshmallow pops? Sounds great!! I bet youve blogged it, so I’ll do a search on Zammabakes. x
Jodie@FreshHomeCook says
Wow Bron, these look delicious! I always did love chocolate crackles, my mum made them a lot. Maybe it is time to start a new tradition with my kidlets by making this!
Maxabella says
I just feel a teensy weensy bit better knowing they are somewhat nutritious, rather than just full of sugar…
Nicole@ The Builders Wife says
I’ve made similar to this for my kids and they love them. Gobbled up before they even knew they were a healthy treat x
Maxabella says
And then we win!! x
Lucy @ Bake Play Smile says
Ooh I love the addition of the dark choc bits. Haha how on earth did no-one ask for the recipe!!?? Now at least they’ll all have it! Geez I would have loved if someone sent along a slice for birthdays when I was teaching… I used to struggle cutting a full cake into 25 pieces every time it was someones birthday (you can NEVER get them all the same size – and then the crumbs go everywhere)!!! Thanks for linking up with our Fabulous Foodie Fridays party! xx
Maxabella says
Cakes are banned at our school – anything requiring teacher-input is just too tricky. Cupcakes are good, but I think slices are better. x
Dani @ sand has no home says
Yum! This sounds so yummy, I’ll be trying it for sure. Oh and there’s nothing wrong with the odd mars bar slice 🙂
Maxabella says
We love an odd Mars Bar slice, Dani. x

This looks divine!! Holding back from heading straight to the kitchen…
Bec @ The Plumbette says
I loved chocolate crackles as a kid and can’t remember the last time I had them. I really need to get onto coconut oil. I’ve seen it in so many healthy recipes. I’ve always been a butter girl.
Kristy @ Loulou Zoo says
Ah I love a recipe with this many (or few?) ingredients…right up my alley! Of course I will substitute some rice malt for the honey cause that’s my thing…will be delish! x
Jodi Gibson (JF Gibson Writer) says
OOooh! I’m going to try this one. Thanks Bron.
Malinda @mybrownpaperpackages says
Isn’t it always the way. Lucky you can share it with us!
Sarah @ tomfo says
Oh wow, I love this and it’s good for you, awesome! I saw a birthday cake made out of chocolate crackles, that was a giant spider at a party recently because the child was gluten and dairy free. Yep, we do the birthday cake thing at school. This year I was a day late with store bought cakes, at least I attempted it.
Vicki @ Boiled Eggs & Soldiers says
Yum, am doing these this weekend. Our school does the cakes for birthdays thing usually it’s cupcakes, some bring donuts, one kid had lolly bags for everyone, the Mums were shaking their heads at that one! Our last birthday we did cup cake “ice cream” cones.
Melissa {Suger} says
Yuuuuum. YUM! Looks good lady. Post pack me a batch would you please? 😉
